        Rip's impressions

A novel idea of Lessing's: the main character has five different notebooks, all different colors, in which she writes different things in each of them. The Golden one isn't even the most interesting.

        literary tidbits

If ever a writer wanted to learn how to begin writing a novel, read this––it starts right in the thick of life! There is some of the best portrayal of vivid dialogue I have ever read. I felt as if I were sitting at the same kitchen table when this conversation took place. If I was going to learn to write dialogue from anyone, it would be her (and John Hawkes).
