This is one of those classic, dark, coming of age prep school novels that take place right after the end of World War II. Not a happy ending. Imagine yourself as a very young teenager taking someone out on your very first date to see this movie. No wonder there was not a second one. True Story.

I went back to the Devon School not long ago, and found it looking oddly newer than when I was a student there fifteen years before.

All of them, except Phineas, constructed at infinite cost to themselves these Maginot Lines against this enemy they thought they saw across the frontier, this enemy who never attacked that way if he ever attacked at all; if he was indeed the enemy.
