The Judge will remind you of Melville's Ahab, but one who comes out of the shadows and does not mind being a forceful player in the story; as if Milton's Satan returned two hundred years later to reek havoc in the mythical Wild West of America. The Kid allies himself with the Judge, and balances out the story with youthful bravado, but in the end has no chance against the Judge.
