A novel idea of Lessing's: the main character has five different notebooks, all different colors, in which she writes different things in each of them. The Golden one isn't even the most interesting.

I felt as if I were sitting at the same kitchen table when this conversation took place. If I was going to learn to write dialogue from anyone, it would be her (and John Hawkes).
